Reflect
The past weeks have been significant in the life of the nation and around the world. During the period of national mourning for Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II we have been discovering more and more about her nature and the qualities she displayed. And of course, our prayers are with King Charles III and the whole royal family.
Much has been written and said about the late Queen’s Christian faith. I was repeatedly struck with how the virtues and values that we seek to instil and develop in children in our Church Schools were exemplified by her throughout her long reign. There can be no doubt that this was because (in her words):
Jesus Christ lived obscurely for most of his life and never travelled far.
He was maligned and rejected by many, though he had done no wrong. And yet billions of people now follow his teachings and find in him the guiding light for their lives. I am one of them because Christ’s example helps me see the value of doing small things with great love…1
To watch a short video pulling together many of the Queen’s words from Christmas addresses which reveal more of her Christian faith go to: https://youtu.be/HK6Z0vM8uWU It provides a remarkable and powerful collection of quotes that summarises what Christians believe.
St Paul challenges us, ‘In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2.5) and “follow my example as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11.1). We might reflect upon and pray that the example of our late ‘servant Queen’ will be mirrored in our lives and roles as we serve God and the families in our schools. And, of course for our King as he begins his reign.
