Maths
At Horndon on the Hill Church of England Primary School, we follow the White Rose Mathematics (WRM) scheme of learning, which is linked to the National Curriculum Programmes of Study.
We use the WRM schemes of learning as they encourage the use of concrete, practical equipment for all year groups before moving on to pictorial and then abstract learning. Different areas of learning in mathematics follow a two- to five-week block of learning, allowing children to consolidate and deepen their knowledge, skills and understanding. |
Maths Shed and Times Tables Rockstars are two of the ways we use online resources to engage, encourage and support children’s fluency with maths.
Each child in school has a free log in to enable them to play these games at home. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any problems.

Phonics
The scheme of work used to support the teaching of phonics is Collins, "Big Cat Song of Sounds". This is a hands-on, systematic, synthetic phonics programme that meets the children's learning needs.
Song of Sounds has a song at its heart that teaches children all of the phonemes necessary to read and write English successfully.
There are daily sessions and longer consolidation sessions to put phonic skills into practice.

Reading
Our Reading Scheme supports early reading by linking closely to our phonics teaching. As readers become more experienced they are exposed to a range of engaging texts designed to boost their language development and verbal interaction. This positive learning environment fosters a love a reading.
Our reading curriculum identifies all the composite skills and conceptual understanding children need to be an effective reader. These composite skills and understanding come directly from the National Curriculum.
We continually promote a love of reading through the use of our school library system and our Reading Cloud.
We have a great app for the children to access a wide range of e-books. The app is called Sora and can be used on tablets, phones and computers.

Writing
The Write Stuff is based on two guiding principles; teaching sequences that slide between experience days and sentence stacking lessons. With modelling at the heart of them, the sentence stacking lessons are broken into bite-sized chunks and taught under the structural framework of The Writing Rainbow. Teachers prepare children for writing by modelling the ideas, grammar or techniques of writing.
Key aspects of The Write Stuff system include:
🌟 The Write Stuff builds pupils’ confidence with sentence structure.
🌟 The approach widens the repertoire of writing options for pupils.
🌟 Pupils gain an understanding of the ‘whole’ piece that they are writing.
🌟 Organisation of their ideas and cohesion between them is strengthened.
